Starcare Hospital Oman -Dr.Bindukumari about OXYTOCIN

OXYTOCIN – “THE FEEL GOOD HORMONE”

Dr.Bindukumari.O,   MD,DGO,DNB,MNAMS

Human bonding is the process of development of a close, interpersonal relationship. Bonding is a mutual, interactive process, and is different from simple liking. Bonding typically refers to the process of attachment that develops between romantic partners, close friends, or parents and children. This bond is characterized by emotions such as affection and trust.

Oxytocin is the hormone involved in bonding, love, childbirth and breast feeding. It also provides relaxation and influences our social behaviour. The beneficial application of this hormone in reducing anxiety, stress and addiction has given the name as ‘feel good hormone’

Oxytocin is mammalian hormone synthesized in hypothalamus and secreted from posterior pituitary into the blood. It regulates uterine contraction during labour and child birth and enables milk ejection during breast feeding and prevents excessive bleeding after delivery. It is the mirror image of the stress hormone adrenalin and has a positive effect on positive feelings. Oxytocin is often thought as a love drug and is linked with all kinds of feel good emotions in people such as trust, empathy and generosity. It acts as a “glue” and creates a strong bond between women and others involved. The excitement over the hormone began in the 1990s when researchers discovered that breast feeding women are calmer in the phase of exercise and physiological stress than bottle feeding mothers.

In the recent scientific studies there had been exciting findings on this powerful hormone whose role in the Human body has long been neglected.

Women who have higher levels of oxytocin during their first 3 months of their pregnancy are primed to the formation of an exclusive bonding with their babies. Also, mothers with lots of the hormone during the entire pregnancy and in the first postpartum month were more likely to sing special songs to infants and otherwise treat them special. They also worried more, checking on the infants more often than other mothers The hormone prepares mothers to engage in bonding behaviour. It is widely believed to make all people more empathetic and understanding of others. Caring and support by loved ones leads to increase in oxytocin and decrease in BP and sympathetic activity.

Oxytocin is secreted in the brain during lovemaking and is believed to play a key role in strengthening monogamous bonding of males and females. It is produced in the areas of the brain that govern emotion and social skills. Autism is a developmental disorder with symptoms that include poor social functioning and repetitive behaviours. Some researchers has suggested that low levels of oxytocin may be involved in the development of autism.

Oxytocin is released into the blood stream when babies suckle at the breast or when lovers embrace. During a stressful situation, a comforting hug by mothers or even a simple telephonic call increases the level of oxytocin thereby making the child feel good and relaxed.

Synthetic Oxytocin is administered as Injections or nasal spray. Injected oxytocin analogues are used for Labour induction and acceleration in case of non progress of labour and also to prevent post partum hemorrhage. Therapeutic uses of Oxytocin in social anxieties and mood disorders are under research and should be administered under close supervision and individual adjustment of dosage.

The potentially beneficial application of this hormone in reducing anxiety, stress, addiction and problems of child birth are not only fascinating but are of great significance to all our lives.
